Korea¡¯s Independence Day
How do other countries commemorate?
Kwang-bok-jeol, Korea¡¯s Independence Day is the fifteenth of August. Kwang-bok-jeol means
¡°Restoration of Light Day¡± literally and recovering the sovereignty of a nation. It¡¯s a designated
public holiday and many activities and commemorative events happen on a national scale dur-
ing the day. What about Independence Day of other countries then? Let¡¯s check Independence

Independence Day of China
The National Day of the People¡¯s Republic of China is celebrated every year on October 1. It lasts for one week as a
legal holiday. Chinese are particularly expecting National Day this year since It¡¯s is followed by Thanksgiving day of
China. Because they don¡¯t have the summer holidays, Chinese usually take a trip during national holidays. So, Train
stations and some travel destinations are crowded with people. Someone who doesn¡¯t reserve train tickets in advance
may have to stand all the way to the destination. But people feel light-hearted with the smile on their face all the way.
There are so many brides and grooms holding their wedding on special days like a National Day. Thanks to this long
vacation, their friendscan gather easily, and they are able to go on a honeymoon leisurely. Some companies allow their
workers to have joint weddings. Something good happens in China on a National day.
Independence Day of Indonesia
The Independence Day of Indonesia is on the seventeenth of August. People in Indo-
nesia start preparing for it a month beforetheir Independence Day. People have their
villages clean and decorated to be selected as ¡°a neat village¡± The officials look around
and screen town so that they can select ¡°a neat village¡± on that day.
And girls and boys representatives of high schools in each state are also selected as
flag bearers in a flag hosting ceremony that takes place in front of the presidential
palace on that day. Those who are selected as a flag bearers, they consider it as a very
honorable moment in their lives. The national flag used in a flag hosting ceremony is
the first national flag historically and traditionally, which is hoisted on that particular
day only. When the day comes, Every school hold a variety of events such as a sing-
ing contest, tug-of-war, running in which people, from children to the elderly people,
participate nationally in a festive mood.
Independence of Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan had its independence from the Soviet Union and becameThe Republic of Uzbekistan on the first of Sep-
tember, 1991. People in Uzbek have many celebrations and display fireworks at Mustakillik(¡°Independence¡± in Uzbek
language) Square. All people come out onto the streets and enjoy their day in a festive mood.
Independence Day of Russia
Russia Day is the national holiday of the Russian Federation, celebrated on June 12. It is a day in which The Soviet
Union was dismantled and Russia was created in 1991.
Independence Day of Vietnam
The second of September is Independence Day of Indonesia. Vietnam declared its independence from France and the
Empire of Japan in 1945. (It was officially recognized the independence through Geneva Convention in 1954)
Independence Day of Mongolia
In the early 20th century, Ch¡¯ing had lost its power and finally was came to the ground. Then Bogd Khaan and Mon-
golian brought down the government of Ch¡¯ing by pulling together. After that, they declared establishment of Bogd
Khaan¡¯s Mongolia on the 29th December, 1991 and informed domestic and foreign of this. But in 1919, the capital, Or-
goo, was captured by Chinese army. However, revolutionists of Mongolia recovered the national rights in 1921, receiv-
ing help from Soviet. Later, they established the constitution and declared their independence on November 11, 1924.
As a result of this, November 11 became the national holiday of Mongolia. On this day, a wide range of events are held
and Mongolian wrestling, one of Naadam, is held, too.
